to Subconscious Mind

Napoleon Hill said that one can accomplish anything desired by repetition of suggestion for six months. However, often times one understands the self improvement goals on a conscious level, but the subconscious is unfortunately stuck in "past failure mechanisms." Self hypnosis is a powerful  tool to get the message from the conscious to the subconscious where change can occur.  To accelerate this process, the late Harry Arons, a well known lay hypnotist from the 1950's through the early 80's, developed a technique to deliver self suggestion in a particular time period. He called it subconscious cerebration which means repetition of suggestion to the subconscious. He developed a technique where by through anticipation and time frame reprogramming was done. For a week, he'd plant suggestion and anticipation by having the client depress each finger into the bed sheet before drifting asleep. With each finger depressed, the client would repeat a suggestion of an anticipating nature. 

The second week he had the client practice several times a day focusing on a spot, counting slowly from one to five with each breadth--each breadth symbolically meaning something. On the fifth breadth, the subject would hold the breadth for a moment, then release by exhaling, close eyes, and then slowly count backwards from fifty to one which took approximately three-to-five minutes. The client practices this for a week after which time, the time period is programmed and a self hypnotic suggestion can be then used in place of the counting of breadths. A suggestion he might have had his client use is, "I am becoming more energetic everyday."

Even though many others used self hypnosis with their clients, Harry was the one that developed it as a technique with a,b,c directions which eliminate the, "I wonder if I'm doing it right?" question. In reality, all hypnosis is self hypnosis for no one ever does anything against their will; they are always aware of their surroundings even while in the deepest of trance. They can open their eyes any time they desire and accompanying most hypnotic procedures is relaxation. The Hypnosis Explained program or as it's also called The Secrets of Hypnosis goes into great detail with many questions and answers. 

Harry would use relaxation with his self hypnosis clients. As the client relaxes he/she often feels sensations of lightness or heaviness which is so pleasant that generally he/she won't want the relaxation to end. They may also experience pleasant numb tingly feelings. During this relaxation, he'd give suggestions such as, "Each and every time you practice self hypnosis you will be more responsive to the suggestion." This is called conditioning.

Autogenic training is another method used for self suggestion. It's generally used by those in the biofeedback field to facilitate muscular and vascular relaxation. Autogenic phrases are suggestions such as:

1. My neck is relaxing. My neck is relaxing.

2. My forehead is relaxing. My forehead is relaxing.

3. My hands and feet are warm and relaxed. My arms and hands are warm and relaxed.

4. My breathing is deep and relaxed. My breathing is deep and relaxed.

Generally a cd is played in which the suggestions are introduced and explained with imagery that might facilitate the relaxation. Then the suggestion is given and the patient then repeats the suggestion to him/her self during a period of silence on the recording. If biofeedback instruments are available as the recording is played, they measure the degrees of muscular and vascular relaxation attained with the Autogenic training. The same results can be obtained by using the same suggestions with the self hypnosis technique.

Six months? Both autogenics and self hypnosis dramatically improve upon simply using self suggestion in that the suggestions are given while in a relaxed receptive state (alpha) as opposed to repeating them to oneself while in a beta state.

All hypnosis is self hypnosis! That's right! The ghetto students would really like to be motivated; they just don't consciously believe it will make a difference. The customer who purchases from the salesman really wants the product; otherwise he wouldn't waste his time listening to the salesman. The person who purchases the advertised and marketed products really wants the benefits of the products otherwise they wouldn't be listening or watching the advertisements. Whether it's the best product or service or not for that particular person is to be discovered.

Suggestions can be given by another person or professional. This delivery can be in person or by recording. But here I must say that all delivery is not equal. The stop smoking program I referred to earlier is basically a script of an hour's duration. Two professionals delivering the same script will have different results. One may be far more effective than the other. What's the difference?

Charisma and belief are the difference. Without charisma and belief, rapport is lost as the subject picks up on the lack of confidence and doubts--the result is that the suggestions are rejected.
