Sleep Aid for Children
-- Reduce Anxiety in Children
True--there
is a nonchemical sleep aid for children. It's true that spending time
with your child before bedtime can be memorable precious moments. It's
story time and they pass too fast for before you know it, they'll be
out of elementary school--too old for bed-time stories.
But on
the other hand, bedtime can be anxiety ridden, "Daddy, there are
monsters in my room--I can't sleep."
"Mommy, I can't
sleep--tell me another story."
"Mommy, I don't feel like going
to bed."
"Please, please, daddy, tell me another story."
Of course there's a whining that goes
along with their comments. It's cute to a point and then it becomes
stressful and you feel like you're never going to get to do anything
for yourself. After all, after their bed-time it is supposed to be
your time to relax and wind down from a long day.
Why don't
they just go off to sleep? Why do they make the evening so stressful?
Eighteen years ago my son (who is now twenty) has
sleeping difficulties. Maybe in part it was from him not understanding
why his mother and I weren't living together. Kids have stress too.
I relished bed-time as an opportunity to tuck him in and read
him a story, but then it became two, three and four stories and he
still was wide awake.
Being a hypnotist I decided tell my son
the story of Rip Van Winkle. His eyes were closed within five minutes
and they stayed closed. While I had a captive audience I added in
suggestions about him growing up to be a responsible person, loving,
kind, respective of others, the planet and so on.
It became
his favorite story and since he never stayed awake to hear the end of
it he always asked for it. After I got the script down to perfection I
recorded it and introduced my son to the tape recorder--he was only
around three years of age.
Much to my pleasure, the recording
worked just as well and even when it clicked off, he stayed asleep. I
would tuck him in, kiss him good night and start the recording.
I even started feeling
a little guilty for how easy bed-time became.
Occasionally
he'd wake up in the middle of the night and come into my bedroom. I'd
listen to his problem and walk him back to his bed, put on the tape
and go back to bed. It always did the trick.
Since that time
hundreds of children have gone to sleep with the story of Rip Van
Winkle and since it's been rerecorded onto cd, there's no longer a
clicking noise at the end of the recording.
End result. My
twenty year of son is the "apple of my eye." I'm so honored to have
him in my life. He's an honor student starting his Junior year in
college, respectful of others, loving, kind, talented, intelligent,
handsome... And I believe that in addition to my parenting, the Rip
Van Winkle sleep aid for children has something to do with it.
